Nook's Stores

Tom Nook
Tom Nook

One of the most important places in your town is Tom Nook's shop. Tom Nook buys and sells items, and his stock changes on a daily basis. He buys items for 1/4 the price he sells them for (e.g. a throne costs 800,000 bells in his shop, it can be sold for 200,000). He also has a catalogue mail delivery service, where a player can order items they've encountered previously and have them delivered to their mailbox.

Nook, like Joan, trades in the "stalk market" - whereas Joan sells turnips to the player on a Sunday, Nook can buy Turnips from the player every day(except Sunday).

At the start of the game the player will choose an existing house owned by Tom Nook (this is the only time Nook is seen outside), owe Nook for a mortgage on that house, and for a short time at the beginning of the game, work for him to pay off part of this debt (which also serves as the game's tutorial).

Rumors say that before Tortimer was mayor he was an expert gardener and had a tool shed. Then he got elected and left the tool shed. Then Tom Nook found his old tool shed and converted it to Nook's Cranny.

Over the course of the game, Nook will expand his store. This is determined by both the transactions (measured in bells traded, either buying or selling) and the amount of time which each incarnation of the store has existed. Both of these requirements need to be fulfilled, e.g. for Nook 'n' Go to upgrade to NookWay, the store needs to have been open as "Nook 'n' Go" for at least 15 days, and it needs to have traded at least 80,000 bells.

For the purposes of upgrading the shop, paying of your mortgage to Nook does not count as trading bells. All that counts is direct purchases from the store or sale of items to Nook.

Below is a list of his store names in order of expansion, their operating hours, and daily inventory.

Each store incarnation has its own background music befitting of the shop's nature and capacity. This is played at all times except within the last ten minutes of opening time, at which point a slower theme plays to show the store will be closing soon. This music is the same for all four versions of Nook's shop and is a more gentle version of the town gate music.

Unlike in previous games, NookWay can be expanded to Nookington's without a player from another town visiting and making a transaction.

Nook wears a different outfit for each store.

After the initial upgrade to Nookington's, Nook will occasionally ask the player about their preferences for his store - whether they prefer a more balanced variety of items, or better hours. The choice they make determines which store he changes to use:

"Variety."
Nookington's
"Balance."
NookWay
"Hours."
Nook 'n' Go
"Nothing much."
No store change
If one selected a store they do not like, it can be changed... About once a month Nook will ask the question again or you can use different players to pick the one that you want.
Nook Points
Buying items from Tom Nook earns the player Nook Points, which can be exchanged for Nintendo-themed prizes. Accumulating Nook points will also increase the player's membership rank, resulting in discounts and models of Nook's store.

Nook Points can be tracked through the green "Nook's Point-Tracking System" machine in the shop. Every 100 Bells spent in Nook's store (including the catalog) earns the player 1 Nook Point. Additionally, selecting the "visitor points" option from the machine will earn 3 points, or 5 if it's done in someone else's town. Visitor points can only be awarded once per day.

Occasionally, Nook will have a Point Special. During that day, the player earns 5 times the normal amount of points for purchases. Nook will announce Point Specials about three days in advance on the notice board outside the Town Hall.
Sales
Nook will occasionally have 50% off sales. These will be announced on the notice board on the day of the sale, which will start later that evening. Note that the 50% off only applies to items that are in the store at that time, and not to the catalog. Discounts do not stack for silver, gold or platinum members.
