The Museum is where the player can donate fossils, fish, paintings, and bugs. They are given to Blathers, the Museum curator, who will instantly put them on display.
Blathers only accepts the first of each species/type of donation; if the player attempts to donate something that has already been donated, Blathers will apologize, name the character who had already donated it, and return the donation to the player.
In addition to accepting donations, Blathers can identify fossils and will ask you if you can donate the fossil to The Museum if it has not already been donated (this is useful because Tom Nook will not buy a fossil that hasn't been identified). Blathers can also list the donations the museum has received along with their donor. The name of the donor for paintings is also shown on the plaque for the painting in the viewing hall itself.
Blathers does not accept donations when the town gates are open: As a consequence, town visitors (either by DS Suitcase or Wi-Fi itself) cannot donate anything, also when you let Blathers identify a fossil when someone's over, Blathers won't mention if it's already in the museum or not, so be careful with this! Each town's museum can only have donations from characters living in that town.
After the player donates everything to the museum, they will receive a letter in the mail with the Museum Model attached. Every player in your town gets a model from the museum, even when they have not donated anything.
Observatory
The Observatory is where you can make your own constellations. Operate the telescope to make constellations, remove them, or just view them.Blathers' sister Celeste works here; talk to her to find out more about the Observatory.
